Casa Guatemala Orphanage Visit

We have had the wonderful opportunity to experience the hard way so many children live, in poverty and without parents who love and care for them. One of the most special things was, just shortly after we arrived at Casa Guatemala, a cute little girl came up to me, sat so close to me and was so interested in my braces and earrings. She touched them with unique intrest. Next thing, she asked me my name in spanish, which I knew, and sure enough she spread the news around and so many others came to me and touched my teeth! There was a nature walk that we went along with and interacted with the children. It was amazing how so many longed to hold our hands and be close to us. Jessica, a sweet little girl gave me and mom each a picked hibiscus flower, and me a vine sort of thing for a bracelet. After having lunch, we participated in some activities. My mom tried to teach the lap sit to a group of the small kiddos with a girl interpreting. The first time it didn't quite work out well... A few boys were trying do do cart wheels (that honestly were not very good), and mom and Ryker were telling me to do one so I did a one handed one, only to make them try even harder. After a few hours of playing in the hot sun and watching a football (soccer to us) tournament in a village nearby, we headed out to the water to take a cooling swim with the kids. As we were dipping into the water we heard a howl from a howler monkey and spied our first pair of them in Guatemala. I have to say, it was kinda sad leaving them after the long day of being with them.

Excursion Down The Rio Dulce River

Currently, I am sitting on the dock in Rio Dulce at the backpackers inn directly by the cooling river. Last night we spent at Finca Tatin in the jungle with hammocks and all. Yesterday we took a hike in the jungle to a waterfall and saw a beetle that looked like actual metal. There are so many quick little red crabs in the jungle it's crazy! Yes, crabs...in the jungle. We took kayaks to some hot springs down near the river. I really don't like the smell of sulphur, rotten eggs-yucky! Mom's arms are pretty sore from that two and a half hours of paddling. Then when it became dark we swung in addicting hammocks and rattled on in conversation and fun with two sweet girls, named Varenna and Lydia, from Germany. We played snaps and the coin game and traded riddles. I now have an interest in learning German after learning a short little bit from Varenna and Lydia. We learned the phrase, "How are you?" - "Wie gehts dir?" And "Oh I feel splendid." - "Mir geht es blended." Dinner last night was superrrrr yummy... Well at least the appetizer. Tomorrow we will be volunteering at the orphanage Casa Guatemala by helping with some activities. So, good bye for now... I am sorry for the long wait.

Day 1 - May 20

Okay, so our first day in Honduras was pretty fun/crazy! On the drive to Roli's Place, where we are staying, the driving was quite rad! A couple of times Roli passed a car in the opposite lane with a car coming straight towards us! I actually never saw any speed limit signs! The scenery is amazing down here - lush and green. On our way we spotted dark smoke up ahead. Once we arrived at the spot where it was coming from, there was a motorcycle on its side that was burning up in the road. Mom said she spotted a guy laying on the ground, supposedly dead. We have seen iguanas and tons of geckos. For lunch we went to Burger & Mariscos where we looked up to Ryker mostly for speaking to the waiter. By the way, Honduras is an all Spanish speaking country and we know hardly any spanish at all. More than 4 random trucks with cows packed in them passed by the restaurant while we were resting. I happened to catch a picture just in the nick if time. After lunch we peddled our bikes to the nearby broken down Spanish ruins. We had ginormous amounts of fun climbing to the top and exploring the echoie rooms. After taking what seemed like hundreds of pictures we headed back to our small room to change and head on over to the non existing beach. Once there, we saw how unclean this place is. Every place we walked there were bottles, paper, diapers, old to-go boxes, and just junk, littered all over the place. Finally we decided we had enough of the sights and headed back to do some journaling. Instead of doing what we planned to do, we interacted in conversation with our German neighbors who had been traveling through Central America since January. My mom, being the promoter she is, invited them to play a game of Shanghai with us. We did, and doing so I aqired seven itching mosquito bites on my legs. After that I decided to go in while Ryker and mom inquired about Belize and Guatemala. This ended our plentiful day.

Oh my word, I almost forgot. Roli (the guy who owns the place where we are staying) is from Switersland and he has an amazing accent. I love it! I know a few of you would love it too😃.
